The Genetic Liberty Front emerged in response to the Speciated Persons Act and Genetic Variant Persons Act, which were enacted by the superpowers. The modern cluster's formation was marked by the rise of corridor travel, leading many flotilla remnants to employ genetic technologies for various purposes, including altering crops, wildlife, and introducing Earth life to new worlds. Tensions arose when these technologies were used to modify humanity itself, resulting in numerous new human variants designed for warfare, labor, adaptation, or aesthetics. The Speciated Persons Act and Genetic Variant Persons Act aimed to address the violence and discrimination faced by this new population within the cluster.
Though these acts were ratified across many worlds, their implementation was inconsistent. Some interplanetary nations continued to enforce subjugation and eradication of speciated individuals. Critics argued that the acts failed to protect these citizens adequately and that the bans on genetic alteration and restrictions on research undermined the acceptance of speciated persons. Furthermore, the acts did not guarantee reproductive rights for these individuals, leading many nations to impose their own rules, resulting in discrepancies ranging from outright bans on reproduction to mandatory genetic viability assessments. Non-compliance often led to incarceration. Additionally, there was widespread concern about government overreach into personal autonomy, with some viewing these measures as criminal if applied to non-speciated individuals.
The Genetic Liberty Front was founded in Preeor on Rinthas, following a Preeoran high court decision that banned reproductive rights for the Selvori, genetically altered descendants of colonists from a non-viable world. The Selvori, originally engineered for combat, were survivors of a nuclear disaster. The court's decision to halt their reproduction was justified on health grounds, aiming to prevent genetic conditions or diseases.
The GLF's initial efforts focused on protesting and fundraising to relocate the Selvori to an orbital community where their reproductive rights were assured. This campaign eventually led to greater parity in Preeoran rights, although the relocation was highly valued by the Selvori. Since then, the GLF has focused on advocacy, providing legal, financial, and medical support for speciated persons. They also offer training and free treatment through volunteer doctors and fund educational materials to counter harmful beliefs about speciated individuals.
Despite their efforts to promote tolerance, the GLF has faced violence from groups opposed to their mission. As a result, they frequently hire Armourauts for security while transporting their key figures throughout the cluster.
