The Orbital Workers League (OWL) appears to have early historical analogues dating back to old earth before the scattering. Pre-cluster scientists appeared to have some largely comparable understanding of Gravity Adaption Syndrome (GAS) and its high incidence in stellar industry professionals populations. Even though the societies of old earth were almost uniformly tyrannical and entirely pre-occupied with basest forms of survival they did recognise the importance of healthy Stellar populations. Or rather certain sections of society did, records indicate that a forerunner movement was The Star Workers Alliance (SWA) that ensured that workers on the vast seed ship construction progress would have rotations to planetary gravity environments regularly and that rotational/centrifugal gravity was vital for long term habitation. The SWA appears to have been largely successful by all historical records and surviving metanalysis appears to indicate the elimination of GAS symptoms within 3 generations.
Today however the need for OWL has never been greater, it is estimated that Gravity Affected People (GAP) populations make up 26% of the totality of the clusters population. Worse 40% of individuals with GAS are in such advanced individual or generational symptoms that they cannot safely be acclimatised to planetary gravity on the majority of worlds. Medication and physiotherapeutic treatments are costly and often only beneficial if consistently taken on longitudinal timescales. Advanced genetic treatments favour 32 week recombination programmes that are costly, risky and only have a 40% long term success rate. Groups like the GLF offer their own treatments but these are not legal in many systems and often involve incorporating non-human sequences that incur a great deal of salubrious and ethical uncertainty for many possible users. Many people are forced into situations where they must work in gravities they are not accustomed to and OWL aims to ensure workers are duly accommodated or compensated for such risks acute health risks.
OWL have been operating for 119 years and in this time they have made significant advancements for gravity affected workers and their families. The New Monaco accords, the GAP emergency caucus and Balharn Stellar Industries Summit are a few notable events agitated for by OWL. Now all interstellar transit companies must include spin gravity for staff and spin gravity for any trip greater than 14 days. In Venti space it is illegal for O’neil Cylinders or any other space habitation to be sold without work spin gravity. In the Union non-GAS workers can only work in 2 on 2 off rosters where they spend a minimum of 7 days off within planetary gravity. GAS treatment is completely free for Union civilians housing for GAP populations is heavily subsidised by the state. In Temple Space all new craft capable of habitation must include a gravity or the means to sustain spin gravity. It is also illegal to sell any craft or habitation that does not have functioning spin gravity capabilities. Though much has changed it is estimated that GAP populations are growing at an unsustainable rate with current O’neil stations. Many will be born and have to live without or with little gravity for generations to come, OWL aims to support these individuals to work and live happily wherever they may be across the cluster.
OWL often represents Armounauts in PMCs and contracted to assist or supplement local law enforcement or militaries. OWL’s most high profile case was representing Armounauts contracted by Seaside that suffered excessive casualties after Seaside refused to engage the gravity ring for life saving surgery and stabilisation. OWL was able to ensure that the Armounauts were duly compensated and that Seaside implemented policy and procedural chnages to promoate safety and security of its orbital contractors. OWL is highly active in the emerging orbital communities of the LNA and the frontier. Their support has helped many workers lead happy healthy lives.
