The Stellar Union began as a highly pacifistic planetary nation, isolated from the rest of the cluster by vast interstellar distances. Though the name of their original colony has been lost to history, it is believed to have been situated on a relatively hospitable, Earth-like planet. The scattering proved to be more favorable to them than to most, and it is hypothesized that their diverse population of laborers, scientists, and specialists contributed to the stable settlement of their world. Valuing diversity in thought and experience, they embraced egalitarianism as a guiding principle. Social democracy naturally emerged as their framework, as they aimed to build a sustainable, enduring society that would avoid the failings of old humanity. For a time, they succeeded.
Their stability and progress was conducive to interstellar exploration and the discovery of faster than light travel via their Pillar. In decades they had settled a dozen worlds. They grew into an interplanetary nation and adopted a far more representative form of governance that recognised the contributions of its many member worlds. It is at this time they named themselves The Stellar Union, soon they found other colonies of humanity uplifting them and offering them membership into their union. They maintained cordial alliances with those nations that rejected membership and found themselves enriched by the trade of goods, culture and ideas. Only when their expansion uncovered signs of decimation, genocide and scores of ruined colonies did they question their pursuit reconnecting with the rest of humanity. But it was too late and before long they uncovered the perpetrators, The Averi, the Obriossian and the Enazcan
These 3 cultures were locked in a state of constant war with each other and a number of other planetary and interplanetary nations when they were connected by the stellar union. Many nations aligned themselves with the union in what was known as “The Compact”. This series of mutual defensive alliances did much to curtail the aggression of the 3 hostile powers. So much so that peace seemed an inevitability. But then, against all odds and reason the Averi, Obriossian, and Enazcan put aside their differences and coordinated a strike against the Union, its allies and a number of independent nations. The Alliance between the 3 previously hostile cultures caught the Union off guard initially and they struggled to prevent the loss of their territory from their combined advances. This period, dubbed the Recrudescence by Union historians, was characterized by total warfare. In time though the union struck back overwhelming and outmaneuvering the invaders. Success after success led them to reclaiming their lost colonies and taking the fight to the Averi, Orbiossian and Enazcan. The war seemed won when the Enazcan called upon their allies, the Lha’Maggean Minds.
In weeks the Lha’Maggeans had depopulated the Union core worlds, erasing centuries of history and societal advancement. The Lha’Maggeans were ceaseless in their assault utilizing their vast arsenals of radiological, chemical, pathological and organic weapons to perform the greatest genocide known to humainity. Only one military installation on a high gravity ice moon persisted against the odds. So tactically insignificant was this last outpost that It had no name aside from its military designation. The kilometers of ocean and ice above served to shield installation CTZX73 from the atomic fusilades of the Lha’Maggeans. The Union restructured its society, mobilizing all of its remaining population to sustain the war effort. Governance, now situated within the military, created new and more devastating weapons to match those of Lha’Maggaeans. Chief among them were the ‘Cohorts’ elite units of soldiers hand picked for their excellence. Details of their founding were not well documented but they are postulated to have excelled at asymmetric warfare and well coordinated assaults. Their resistance was so impactful that the Cohorts have remained a feature of the state’s military, intelligence and enforcement architecture to the present day.
While the besieged Union military carried out what limited resistance it could, the war had been declared won by the enemy. The victor set about dividing what territories that had been spared by the Lha;maggean holocaust. Most remaining union populations had seen little choice capitulated to occupation but there were some cells that carried out ongoing resistance. One such group was the valentine fleet. There origins are poorly understood though a prominent story around them creation and the significance of their name indicates that a collection of like minded ship captains fled occupation at the later days of the war. Commandeering large O’neil stations and moving entire orbital populations into corridor space. Moving from system to recruiting and liberating even more orbital populations emboldened by their success and recognising that the victors say for the Lhamageans had almost no surviving naval assets to prevent the mass exodus. When small policing forces could be mustered they were challenged by assortments of jury rigged mining suits and retrofitted lighters. The valentine fleet grew and splintered until cells existed in every system. The smuggling was the lifeblood of the resistance and was instrumental in supplying the organizing disparate remnants of the union military. The new age of the conflict began in earnest as the former union territories sought to take up the fight once more. In truth many have never stopped the fight, one such crew started to put their plan for retaliation into action.
Before the war, the Stellar Union initiated the secret construction of a colossal stellaser, significantly larger than the one that had propelled the original Old Earth flotilla to Proxima B. This new stellaser, situated in the Harlan system, was designed to reduce reliance on corridor space and Pillars, enhance in-system travel, and facilitate exploration of non-corridor systems. The project aimed to develop fully self-reliant vessels, akin to those in the old flotilla but with centuries of technological advancements, primarily featuring smaller scientific missions supported by autonomous crews. By the time the war began, only six prototype ships had been constructed and accelerated to relativistic speeds in two trial groups orbiting the Harlan system. These ships were more about testing hardware and the psychological effects of time dilation than actual exploration. From their frame of reference, it appeared that the Union was winning and had overwhelmed the Obriossian core, but a subsequent update revealed the unexpected entry of the Lha’Maggeans into the conflict. They decimated much of the Union's navy and bombarded numerous worlds. The stellaser, crucial for the project, was destroyed, and one vessel, the “Apri”l, crashed into the Lha’Maggean fleet in a last-ditch effort to allow the other two vessels, “Tomorrow” and “Zeno”, to escape. With their nuclear pulse propulsion drives unable to decelerate and intercepted transmissions showing the Union's utter defeat—marked by genocide, slavery, and forced genetic servility—the final trial group accelerated through corridor space. Their slingshot trajectory brought them into the Lha’Maggean system, where they crashed into stellar debris, delivering a decisive blow to the Lha’Maggean fleet and obliterating the moon of Lha’maga.
This was the turning point in the war, with the Lha’Maggeans realing they were unable to contribute as significantly and were forced to allow their allies to prosecute the war. Entrenched Union resistance capitalized on this and Union intelligence was able to conduct operations that would allow the union to return to the conflict on more even footing.
The Averi flash clone slave revolts marked a pivotal and chaotic period in the conflict with the Averi. Originally, the Averi used flash-cloned slaves extensively, relying on them for labor and military roles. When these clones, driven by their harsh conditions and a burgeoning sense of self-awareness, began to revolt, they faced brutal suppression by their masters. Union intelligence, seizing the opportunity, discreetly supported the revolt by ferrying weapons, supplies, and material to the flash clones. This covert assistance proved crucial in enabling the rebels to seize control of Averi fleets and armies, amplifying the impact of their uprising. The coordinated efforts led to the disruption of Averi military operations and significantly weakened their capacity to maintain control, turning the tide of the revolt in favor of the slaves and further destabilizing the Averi’s position in the war.
The GELF cascade was a devastating crisis triggered by the uncontrolled proliferation of bioweapons deployed by the Lha’Maggeans and the Enazcan during the war. These bioweapons, originally designed for mass destruction and genetic manipulation, mutated and spread uncontrollably across numerous worlds. As the war dragged on, these dangerous pathogens and engineered organisms infiltrated countless ecosystems, leading to catastrophic consequences. Allies of the Lha’Maggeans and Enazcan, struggling to contain the outbreak, faced collapsing biospheres and plagues that ravaged both populations and wildlife. The GELF warforms, a type of biotechnological entity created from these mutating bioweapons, reproduced at alarming rates. Their sheer numbers and resilience forced combatants to deploy heavily mechanized units to combat the ever-growing threats. The cascading effects of the GELF outbreaks devastated worlds and disproportionately disorganized the Lha’Maggean alliance. The union who had already been combating GELF bioweapons for many years faired far better. That being said the losses on all sides were immense and the cluster to this day is plagued by invasive descendant GELF life forms
The Black matter crisis was a catastrophic event that led to the complete destruction of the Obriossian homeworld. The crisis was triggered by a rogue nanomachine experiment that went awry, resulting in a rapid, uncontrolled replication of nanomachines. This self-replicating cascade and thermal runaway created planet-wide firestorms, which ultimately incinerated the nanomachines and halted their destructive advance. While the homeworld was obliterated, the surrounding Obriossian system was left severely damaged and remains under strict quarantine to this day. In response to the disaster, the superpowers of the cluster have unanimously banned nanomachine technology and research, recognizing the profound risks posed by such unchecked technological advancements. The Obriossian war effort collapsed and the union mopped up their remaining fleets with ease.
The final chapter of the war against the Lha’Mhaggeans culminated in the total destruction of their homeworlds. After years of relentless conflict and mounting pressure from the Union and its allies, the Lha’Mhaggean planet Lha’Maga became the epicenter of the final confrontation. The Lha’Mhaggeans, infamous for their cruel and genocidal weapons, turned their arsenal on themselves in a last-ditch effort to resist the Union’s invasion. The result was the utter devastation of Lha’Maga, leaving it as one of the most hostile environments in the Cluster, with persistent chemical and viral hazards rendering the surface nearly uninhabitable. This event marked the end of Lha’Mhaggean resistance and the beginning of a period of isolation for the Union, now tasked with managing the fallout from this devastating campaigns
Over decades the Union rebuilt its fleets and army and cleared the orbits above its last strong hold in one decisive battle. Victories were hard won after that but the liberated Averi and Obriossian populations contributed to the war effort. The erosion of the Lha’maggeans culminated in the siege of Lha’Maga where the Mind's refusing surrender and unable to break their planetary blockade resorted to full scale warfare on their homeworld. They turned their cruel weapons upon the forces landing on their homeworld. Their chilling disregard for self preservation led to the complete destruction of the final bastion. Now the surface of Lha’Maga is the second most hostile place for life in the cluster. Lha’Mhaggean viral and chemical weapons persist in their radiation baked soil and noxious oceans, the only complex life appears to be semi-sapient living weapons that populate the ruin-scapes, predating one another in a gross perversion of a natural ecosystem. The war with the Lha’Mhaggeans had no discreet ending, after years survivors of their self imposed holocaust became less numerous. Soon decades had passed without a single siting, soon all evidence of the lush jungles, sprawling arcologies and verdant seas was confined to pre war union surveillance dossiers. To this day a union battle group maintains a cordon over Lha’Maga to isolate its numerous biological and chemical hazards.
With the war over, the Stellar Union renamed itself the Lunar Union to acknowledge efforts of the veterans of the CTZX73 in its survival. The Icey moon received the name ‘Defiance’ to story its significance for future generations and cement it as a historical icon. Recolonisation was lengthy but surviving populations emerged and to occupy whatever worlds remained nominally habitable. Options were decidedly limited, high gravity worlds were the only remaining source of ecology and complex biospheres in many cases. Many of the conflict worlds retained lingering effects of Lha’Maggean’s Arnsenal. Their preferable gravity was often seen as not worth the physical and financial risks associated with their colonization. Moreover, the vast agricultural needs of the recovering union worlds could not be feasibly met by anything else aside from open air farming on stable planetary environments. Only when a plague derived from dormant bio-weapons was unknowingly spread by unscrupulous salvagers across the union was the notion of resettling the conflict worlds abandoned completely. This catalyzed the restructuring of society and highlighted the need for a new capital. The super earth type planet Itivian was elected to be the new center of governance, its cities and infrastructure were spared the worst of the recrudescence due to its relative lack of significant military installations. The reinvigorated state created a new city on Itivan to house its interplanetary administration, ‘Victory’ would be a monument to democracy’s triumph over tyranny.
The Recrudescence revealed to many in the Union how fragile the existence of the ideology was when faced with the threat of war. The former government ceased to exist with the commencement of the Lha’Maggean Genocide. The Generals that oversaw the remainder of the recrudescence sought to ensure that democracy would never be threatened again. Their reforms situated power within a single party system that was tasked with protection of the people and the democratic principles of the union. Veterans were empowered to make decisions on policy initiatives directly whilst civilians exercised their will by electing representatives. Veterans and elected officials participated in local Caucuses where a presidium of experts enacted policy for their regions. The Peoples Plenum replicated this basic structure but its High Presidium was Led by a Chairman of the People. This shift away from the former system of governance was popularly received and has seen little revision since its adoption.
The Union free from major conflict flourished education, healthcare and housing were guaranteed by the state and its vast population participated in its planned economy. The ever expanding military struggled to supply itself and industrial efforts began to value quantity over quality to meet logistical needs. Few hold outs and dissidents could provide any meaningful resistance to the Union, though the final Enazcan fleet eluded capture for decades. Their raids on outposts and supply depots however narrowed the Union’s search. Harried by the pursuing Union 3rd naval strike group the desperate Enazcan sought to flee through an uncharted corridor to evade them. The 3rd strike group gave chase and in doing so became embroiled in the contact crisis. When the Union found the Enazcan they were attempting to communicate to a number of unknown vessels, They Enazcan claimed to be refugees from the Union and sought asylum to escape religious persecution. Without any means to interpret what the other vessels were saying, the 3rd strike group began jamming transmissions of the Enazcan fleet. What happened next is highly contested but Union records indicate the enazcan fired upon the 3rd strike group that upon retaliating in kind were fired upon by the unknown vessel’s. Within minutes fire was being exchanged between these unknown vessel’s. Without this development the 3rd battle group would have certainly been destroyed. The aging Union warships and aerospace fighters suffered tremendous casualties at the hands before the order for full retreat was issued.
The contact conflict escalated over 8 months until a general ceasefire was negotiated by linguist onboard a surviving Enazcan vessel. This representative of the Temple using bi-scirpts of pre-scattering language deciphered Oziak, an Enazcan language, opening a dialogue between all parties. The superpowers agreed to recognise each other's territorial claims and sovereignty along with those of numerous other cluster nations. Impasse was reached however when it came to the fleeing Enazcan, the temple viewed them as refugee whilst the Union saw them as union citizens’ that were harboring extremists, war criminals and what remained of the Enazcan theocracy. The Venti preached for a mutually agreeable situation but rather than diffusing the situation this resulted in the kidnapping and execution of the Temple’s diplomatic mission. The crisis seemed intractable when the Enazcan warriors announced they would lay down their weapons so long as their priests and civilians would be granted sanctuary among the Venti. The superpowers agreed and the contact conflict officially ended, what followed was a cold war unprecedented in scale and length.
The Next 192 years of relative peace saw the lagging union military desperately trying to modernize, stabilize its vast territory and colonize the frontier. The contact conflict laid bare many of the weaknesses of the Union. Temple warships were unmatched in firepower and their staggering level of autonomisation allowed them to endure damage that would render conventional crews incapacitated. The Temple’s drone fighters were not limited by having human operators, they could consistently and effectively maneuver in ways that would kill their union counterparts. Whilst the Venti understanding of vacuum warfare had been honed by centuries of war within their faction. Their diverse fleets emphasized combined arms doctrine of fleet warfare with a number of specialized vessels providing each other with mutual support. The Union’s MOA pilots were ill equipped and experienced for space combat. Their vacuum manovre gear struggled to keep pace with the more nimble Temple and Venti making them vulnerable to interdiction. The only consolation the Union had was in ground warfare where their professional army edged out the less numerous and more specialized Temple and Venti forces. Today the Union has both the largest Navy and Army, however they are spread out over their vast territory and are preoccupied primarily with policing. It has yet to be seen if the Union has sufficiently modernized but there is every indication that they are on a far more equal footing with other superpowers now. What is less clear is whether the military can continue to stabilize its territory.
The Contact conflict impacted countless people across the cluster though it was not protracted or especially costly. In an instant the cluster had changed new people, new trade, new cultures and new ideas sprang from what was thought to be the emptiness of space. Though a major war had been averted, the price of peace for the union was constant vigilance. The union went from having no borders with major powers to a border that ran the entire length of its territory split between 2 more advanced superpowers. To the Union’s benefit the rules of engagement had changed, espionage, statecraft and economics were the avenues of attack in the ideological arena. Nevertheless any of these interactions between complex webs of competing corporate, political and strategic interests had the potential to seed war. This would have been disastrous for the union. Extremists, pirates and seditionists were beginning to recognise the opportunities afforded to them by this shift in paradigm.
Malankev Stragovi was one such agitator that called for the dissolution of the people’s plenum in favor of a multiparty system. He believed that the union had betrayed its democratic principles and that the veterans had lost their way. To Him they had become mired by bureaucracy and capitalism, at best serving themselves and at worst serving only the letter of the law, rather than its spirit. Stragovi was an elected veteran representing the civilian population of Caspardryll and his message resonated with the people there. He fostered a close relationship with the Temple and Venti and his movement received the majority of its funding from them. The end of his political machinations were made clear when he read to Caspadryll’s Caucus a number of demands. He called for dissolution of the caucus and for his movement to oversee elections, he sought to have Caspadryll become an independent planetary nation and the complete nationalization of industry. When these demands met strong opposition many in Stargovi’s movement took action. Demonstrations, boycotts and strikes took place in a number of nations on caspadryll.
The movement gained traction but as it did its members became more daring, impatient with the speed of reform attained by peaceful means. Motor vehicle attacks against counter protesters alienated much of Stragovi's support. Perhaps more troubling was Stragovi’s reluctance to condemn these attacks, on several occasions he was even accused of condoning them. While investigating prominent bad actors within Stragovi’s movement Cohort 3 operatives uncovered evidence of a more widespread conspiracy. Recordings of Stragovi instructing one of his compatriots to seek out a series of arms traders to create caches in preparation for anticipated conflict were attained. Questioning of the associated individuals revealed troubling plans that laid out strategic use of terror attacks, kidnappings and sabotage to forcefully bringing about the dissolution of the Union Caucuses on Caspadryll. Stragovi evaded questioning and attempted to flee to Temple space, some of his followers carried out improvised attacks whilst others sought to follow Stragovi’s lead. In the end, Stragovi and 110 of his compatriots were apprehended, tried and imprisoned for conspiracy and terrorism. Stragovi was soon executed for his capital offenses and his other followers remained imprisoned in life sentences without opportunity of parole. In their place rose a number of successor movements that carried out attacks on Caspadryll, Yengshen and worlds across the cluster.
Though attacks occurred the Union military viewed them as largely unconcerning, their limited scope contributed to the sentiment that these were isolated issues. Not warranting the intervention of Cohort 3 or the military any longer. For decades local enforcement agencies took on the brunt of curbing terrorist and seditious behavior. This changed when the First Frontier Colony of Castigor was attacked by a group Called Stragovi 111. Polermo Station above the above castigor was seized and deorbited onto the union colony of Ulm in a highly coordinated terrorist act. The colony was the largest repository of Pillaritein the cluster and many of these artifacts collected from the pillars were awaiting cataloging before being moved to more secure housings or destruction. The attack created a technological and radiological disaster that damaged the planetary environment so much that habitation of the world became unviable. What Immediately followed was the Liberty Accords where the Plenum unanimously voted for increased rigor and extension of its surveillance and security protocols within the union to prevent another castigor.
Today the Union endeavors to secure democracy for its members and support its population by increasing standards of and access to housing, education and healthcare. Many in the Union recognize that truths that they hold to be self-evident are challenged throughout the cluster. They are nevertheless committed to pursuing them by any means possible. The Union has increasingly utilized Armournauts to help them attain their goals, whether it be through Lunar Irregular Corp or more independent contractors. The Union typically pays well, honoring bounties for members of Stragovi 111 and Rex Panthera in any of their territories. Many union Colonies in the frontier rely heavily on Armounauts as the Union along with other superpowers have agreed to strict limits on the number of their active personnel in the new region. Union Colonies have been known to provide large swathes of land, mineral rights or exclusive trade contracts as lucrative incentives for especially trusted Armournauts. Aerospace craft are in particular demand for their ability to meet planetary and orbital threats and combat piracy.
